Gynaecology and Obstetrics Ultrasound

What is Gynaecology and Obstetrics Ultrasound?

  • Anomaly scan is also known as anatomy scan.
  • Gynecology scan is usually done around 20th week of pregnancy; and is also called level 2 ultrasound. However, obstetric scan can be done whenever an abnormality in the pelvic or abdominal regions are suspected.
  • It assesses the anatomical structures of pelvic, placental, and fetal organs.
  • This is a routinely scan which is considered as a follow up in the prenatal care.
  • However, an obstetric scan specifically involves the detection of abnormalities such as viability, gestational age (growth and development of the fetus), missed abortion, ectopic gestation, placental maturity (maturation of the embryo in placenta), fetal weight, amount of fluid in the placental sac, etc.
  • It uses ultrasound rays of extremely high frequency to gain imaging on the developing fetus.
  • The ultrasound is done via Edan U60 which is an ultrasound machine manufactured based on the advanced and latest technological protocols of in-depth scanning.

When you should do the scan?

  • In the case of pregnancy, one should do detailed ultrasound between 18th to 21st week of pregnancy.
  • The purpose of the scan is to check if any abnormality exists in the baby. Therefore, around the 20th week, screening test or ultrasound is recommended in case of gynecological ultrasound.
  • The reason for conducting an ultrasound might be routine check-up, follow up of previous scan, blood reports, etc.

  • The patient is recommended to drink at least 2-3 glasses of 8 ounces before the scheduled scan.
  • The patient is also advised to come for ultrasound without urinating so that the scan can be taken with full bladder.
  • Edan U60 is quite user-friendly and does not require complicated efforts to operate the machine.
  • The sonologist can easily operate the machine in compliance with the instructions that comes in the manual with the Edan U60 apparatus.

How long would it take for results?

  • During the scan, the technician observes the images of an ultrasound on the screen. However, after the scan is done, a physician makes a report considering the results that the ultrasound scan demonstrates.
  • After the provider finalizes the report, it is handed over to the patient immediately.
  • Edan U60 is known for its rapid and quick service, unlike the conventional ultrasound machines. The ultrasound machine presents outcomes of the scan, along with a written report in no time.
  • With Edan U60, the patient does not have to wait for longer hours or days to receive the results.

  • After the test, the patient is advised to visit the consultant.
  • Based on the ultrasound scan results, the gynecologist plans the follow up scans and visits.
  • Moreover, the scans of the results also assures if any anomaly exists or not.
